Self Assessment Tax Return

Self Assessment Tax Return

Didn't find your answer?

Hi All,

I've just signed up as an agent through the Government gateway and sent everything off for my agent codes by snail mail.

My understanding was that if using a third party software such as Taxfiler, I only needed the Government gateway login details to submit the tax return. However, I'm getting the following error message:
Authentication Failure. The supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Thanks,
John

You do
But you also have to be registered for all the taxes you wish to work with.

You might have to wait until Self Assesment is activated on your account.

Cheers Glennzy, thought as much but was told otherwise!

Not to worry, will just have to wait for the snail mail to get to HMRC.

You're knackered until you are registered for SA as an agent.

Why are you doing it all by post? You can register for the different taxes online as long as you have your log in details, which will be both faster and more reliable than relying on an actual person to get it right in a timely fashion.

You can only apply for an agent code for SA by writing to HMRC.

Yep an agent code for self assessment can only be obtained by writing to them.

I should be up and running in a couple of years time.

Just checked, SA is definitely there in "Services you can add" on the portal. I can't follow through. Checked on the PAYE/CIS login. Already have SA on a different one.

Only half the battle, I'm afraid.

Services you can add > self assessment (SA) for agents > enrol for this service > insert self assessment agent number

To obtain the self assessment agent number, you must write to HMRC.

You're doing so in the hope they'll a) receive it and b) bother to do anything with it.

I wish you well!

Well if Making Tax Digital is simply the computer telling us to write, I'm no longer worried about it.
