Self Employed National Insurance Refundable?

Self Employed National Insurance Refundable?

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I have been self employed and employed since 2004 until 2013 and now I am full time self employed.  I have been paying national insurance on my employment and the self employment national insurance (Quarterly).  I thought this would help towards my state pension but I now understand this is not correct?

Can I apply for a refund from 2004 to 2013 as I was paying national insurance through my employment and volunteered to pay the self employment which I am unsure if it was necessary?

Please can someone advise if a refund is possible and if so how do I go about doing it?

Thanks

Tara

Self Employed NI is not voluntary

But you may be entitled to small earnings exemption if you meet the annual criteria

Salary levels?

You are liable to pay both if not entitled to the reliefs mentioned by occca.

However, there is an overriding maximum in a year and if you pay maximum Class 1 on your salary you will probably not need to pay Class 2 or 4.

As above

there is an overriding maximum but since the introduction of the higher 2% band that has meant that there is likely to be some level of  contributin due from all sources.

If you have been paying at standard rates for both employment and self employment there is likely t be some refund due - the calculations became more fiddly with the 2% upper earnings rate.

Follow the link to the CF10 claim form and fill in all the details you have available of contributions and send it off to NICO then wait
