Is self-employment "another job" for PAYE

Is self-employment "another job" for PAYE

Didn't find your answer?

This might sound stupid, if so, then it probably is ... BUT, do I need to register a business for PAYE where it's sole employee will be earning less than £112 per week AND is also self-employed? In other words, does the employee's self-employment count as "another job" .... if not, then I don't need to register that business for PAYE. But if self-employment does count in HMRC-speak as "another job", then I do need to register that business for PAYE.

I've tried googling this, but to no avail. And, as I said, this does sound like a crazy question, since employment and self-employment are both strictly speaking employments ... but you never know when dealing with HMRC, who often interpret the English language somewhat differently to me.

I appreciate your input. Thanks

No ...

... because they are on self-assessment they will be submitting a tax return and will account for this income.

The other employment question is to ensure their tax code is applied correctly.

They will pay no tax on the employment and any excess personal allowance will be off-set against their self-employed income.

thanks, but I that's the answer to a slightly different question

To clarify, the HMRC "register your business for PAYE scheme" pages states that "if you employ anyone who earns more than £112 per week and who gets a pension or already has another job", then you need to register the business to run a PAYE scheme. The question is, does self-employment count as "another job" or not? If it does, then I need to register this business to run PAYE scheme. If it doesn't, then I don't.

Hope that clarifies the question. It's not about how to account for tax and personal allowances, it's about whether it is necessary to register the business to run PAYE on its sole employee.

Jobs

The person is Self Employed they are not an Employee.  PAYE is not relevant.

I think it's 'no'

I think that 'another job' really means another employment potentially subject to PAYE.  That's about the only thing that will have a tax consequence and setting up a new scheme would be a complete waste of time and effort otherwise.

Unless he really really wants a PAYE scheme I wouldn't bother.

OGA answered your question

You didn't need to ask it again. He understood perfectly.

Was clear and concise. Maybe re-read the answer he has given.

Thanks, point taken

Thanks to all the contributors ... I think I did understand OGA's answer, but I just wanted a "more definite" answer .... which was most definitely forthcoming, seawych and Red Leader especially being really helpful here .... once again thanks to all of you.

What can be ...

... more definite than "NO" ffs, I even explained exactly why it is no - I wonder why I waste my time some days!

AccountingWeb seems to have been transformed into a timewasters forum. There's non-accountants wanting free advice when it's obvious they need an accountant to help them. There's accountants asking how to do the most basic things.

Because you're a good guy....

Hi OGA (a moniker which fits me perfectly, except I think I'm now well past the "greying" bit....) and all you other contributors

Sorry I wasted your time ... but to me it was something I honestly hadn't come across before, and although OGA was clear, I still needed another helping hand to make it even clearer still ... so once again thanks to all of you.

i thought I was grumpy!

To be fair, when I saw the title of the Original Post I thought "Oh! another daft question"

But, when I read the body of the text I realised that it was something that's probably happened to all of us at some time or other. It's that situation where you find yourself overthinking the question and start finding problems with the obvious answer even when it's really is the right one.

KH has explained his thinking and I think that helping with his nagging doubt was what we're here for.

Lets save our distain for the 'know-nothinmgs' hoping for a free ride.

I think after almost 4 years he's probably either got his answer, or doesn't care anymore...
