Shift working

Shift working

Didn't find your answer?

Hello

The manufacturing company I work for is currently thinking of introducing shift working.

I wondered if anyone had any comments re: the 'normal' payment incentives for shift working - how much and when do they kick in.

We have identified 3 different possible rates.

1 Saturday working - or is this now considered a 'normal' day?

2 Sunday working

3 Earlys / lates - at what point does this attract a higher salary - ie before 6 in the morning / after 8 at night ?

If anyone has any experience / advice in this area it would be appreciated.

Thanks

When I worked for the Co-op

...anything before 7am and after 10.30pm was classed as unsociable hours and therefore attracted a higher rate of pay but Saturday and Sunday were classed as normal working days.

I do know this was removed from new contracts shortly after I received my own in 2003.

I don't know about manufacturing

... being an accountant in the Thames Valley!

However, we have a nursing home client where staff are required 24/7 and they work both day and night shifts on rotas which include Saturdays and Sundays as normal.  Staff who work night shifts are paid just 20p more an hour than those on the day shift at the £7.50 an hour level or 50p more at the £15 an hour level.  There are enough people who are happy to work at nights for this comparatively small premium.
