Yesterday, I did an online request for a shortened period of account to the 30th of March as we had no hope of submitting accounts on time (client fault, not ours). It's not showing up as actioned yet on the Companies House website, but I did check with them yesterday and they had it in their pending queue. Will a fine automatically be issued as the accounts are now technically overdue?
Thanks. Sarah

No
My understanding is that the penalty notice is normally triggered by the late submission of the accounts. Since you have not yet submitted any accounts no penalty notice will have been triggered yet.

Slow processing
We were concerned to discover today that various sets of 31.03.12 accounts posted first class to Companies House by 21st December 2012 were now being marked as "overdue". We called Companies House and we were evidently not alone as the stressed operator said that they were only just processing today mail received on 21st December, followed immediately by "No! Don't you dare pass any comment!".
why do people still use the post?
and i dont understand the dates in the OPs Q. why would you shorten to 31.03 (2012?) if you didnt have the info? anyway dont you get another 3 months from the date of extension, or is that all gone now. the public record takes time to update , if you have webcheck you can see if it has been received and is being processed
With respect
to Euan I think I would have used Special Delivery given the date and time of year. At least this way you have solid proof that they were sent. And before anyone comesback and asks about Recorded Delivery I was told by the Post Office a few years ago that Recorded Delivery can actually slow things down so we very rarely use Recorded Delivery.
With no disrespect to Innkeeper
First class post on Friday, 21.12.12, should have been delivered to Companies House on:
Saturday, 22.12.12, or failing thatMonday, 24.12.12, or failing thatThursday, 27.12.12, or failing thatFriday, 28.12.12, or failing thatSaturday, 29.12.12, or failing thatMonday, 31.12.12
of which the last four days fall after the Christmas rush, so posting first class on the 21st should have been safe for delivery by the 31st.
Actually, the accounts were posted by clients and they may well have sent them by Special Delivery, but my point was that Companies House is only processing today the mail which it received on the 21st and that would not include mail sent by Special Delivery on the 21st.
@Carnmores
People still have to use the post if they are filing audited accounts for a medium-sized company as Companies House do not offer any electronic facility for such accounts.
I think you have rather missed the point about the dates. The OP amended the date from 31.03.12 to 30.03.12 in order to obtain the extra 3 months to file the accounts (which can still be made up to 31.03.12 as that is within 7 days of 30.03.12).
@BigBadWolf
Audited accounts for small and large, but not medium-sized, companies can now be filed online.
@ Euan

True - but not all the software can cope with it yet, nor can the web filing system.
I also remember reading somewhere that non standard audit opinions also can't be filed online ... that seemed a bit odd ....is this correct ?
I don't
disagree with Euan but at least if they had gone by Specual Delivery you could check on line using the Royal Mail Tracking Service. I totally agree with Euan that it is appalling that CH is only processing post received on 21st December today.
thanks for pointing that out
certainly i have had to scamper round at the last minute to the new CH offices off Victoria Street ,if in london that is a much better option.
re OPS question we didnt know that it was one day. CH should stop 1 day shortenings i suppose , simply on the basis that you can file 7 days either side of the ARD anyway - it is a bit of a life saver sometimes tho
should we really lean over that much for tardy clients
