Should I pay this HMRC interest

Should I pay this HMRC interest

Didn't find your answer?

We had an overpayment showing on HMRC online for the year ending April 2015. I established this had been due to an issue at HMRC end with an FPS submission.

My FPS report showed the correct amount to pay over - which I paid.

This resulted in an apparent 'overpayment'.

On logging in to Sage this week, it told me I needed to file an earlier year update - which I did in conjunction with the sage helpline. There is an apparent issue with sage, according to the helpline.

This then logged an increase to the liability for the prior year. Great, I thought, my account should now balance to zero and all be good.

However, even though there was an 'overpayment', I am now being charged interest.

The amount is trivial, (less than £100), but even so I feel I shouldn't have to pay it. Not really worth spending too much time on the principal though.

No

Payment was due on a specific day, and you had paid it by then.

I would write or telephone and ask that they ensure that the payments retained their original dates and the interest should just disappear. It sounds as showing tem as an overpayment changed the payment date to the date of allocation not when originally paid.
