Should a non trustee sign Scottish charity accounts?

Should a non trustee sign Scottish charity...

Didn't find your answer?

The charity in question is a church and the elders are the trustees.

The treasurer is not a trustee but has signed the accounts for many years along with a trustee.

My understanding is that ONLY trustees should be signing the accounts (along with the IE of course).

What do readers think and can you point me to "chapter and verse" on this.

Incidentally the IE is a trustee of a related charity - anyone have concerns about that?

Thanks to all who read this and big thanks to anyone who answers.

I am no expert in the rules that govern Scottish charities, but I imagine that there are rules that say that accounts must be approved by the trustees and signed by one of their number to evidence that approval. You say that has happened here, so there has been no breach of such a rule if it exists.

I would be surprised if there was a rule that said that the addition of any further signatures would invalidate the record of the the trustees' approval if one of the signatories was not a trustee. Why would that make any sense?

Does it not make sense for the treasurer to sign as treasurer, but not of course as trustee, as he must to say the least have had some hand in the preparation of the accounts?
