Site crashes - anyone else experiencing these on the new site

Site crashes - anyone else experiencing these...

Didn't find your answer?

Since the new Aweb site has been set up, and it's certainly better in many ways, i have however found that my browser is more prone to crashing whilst browsing Aweb. Never had that problem on the old site. I am using Internet Explorer 7 on the company network. Anyone else notice this?

What type of crash?

Using Firefox (which has just been updated) I get regular "file/URL cannot be found" type errors whils trying to navigate the site, particularly when I try to access private messages. The Firefox update coincided with the AWeb memory upgrade last week so it makes it diffcult to pinpoint the source of the problem.

No probs

I use Firefox 5 and have no problems.  One thing I would say is exploring alternative browsers to Internet Explorer is always useful - if you haven't done this, you might well prefer something different.

Also, using Internet Explorer 7 suggests that you might be running Windows Vista.  Even Microsoft have admitted that Vista was a mistake.  I seriously recommend an upgrade to Windows 7 if you are still using Vista - I can assure you it will run better than Vista on any hardware.

Further experience

If anyone else has experienced such issues please let us know or post them here. Obviously it's something we'll want to have a look at, especially if it's affecting a number of people.

Many thanks

Jenny

Neither problem

In the office, we use Firefox 6 on XP workstations.  At home, I use Firefox 6 on Vista.  I have had neither crashes nor missing URL problems at either home or away.

What type

"unexpected error" - of course.

I don't usually do a lot of Aweb at home, too busy with work/homelife balance but i do use Firefox when at home.

I stopped using Internet Explorer years ago

Your problem looks like something specific to Internet Explorer.

I use both Firefox and Chrome - far better browsers in my opinion.

Download either (both are free) and look forward to a faster and more reliable browsing experience.

Backpedalling on replies to Any Answers

If I change my mind / make an error on what I've written in reply to an Any Answers question (but never in discussions or PMs) it often seems to get stuck when I'm pressing the arrow to go backwards & I have to move the cursor to the right place with my mouse. Sod's law of course that on this one now it's working fine!!!

IE can be unstable / get alternative browsers as a back up

No problems, so far as I can see, with Google Chrome, IE8 or IE9 with the AWeb site.

However, IE9, supposedly "the latest and best" Internet Explorer version does freeze up and crash quite often, usually on AOL eMail webpages so far as I can see in my particular case.

It pays to have alternative browsers installed therefore...

Google ChromeFirefoxOperaSafari

are the four alternatives that I have at the ready for when IE9 crashes.

What can happen is that a website designer will optimise the website for (say) IE8 or IE9 and perhaps this is when some problems can arise if the browser an indivudual user has is not the favored "optimised for" browser.

@DMGBus

I am puzzled.

If you find that "IE9, supposedly "the latest and best" Internet Explorer version does freeze up and crash quite often", why do you use it as your default browser and not one of your "alternative browsers"?

Choice of browser

SAID:  " I am puzzled.

No computer software is perfect, therefore it helps to have a selection and use which works best in varying circumstances.  Here's my findings:

IE9 I prefer for it's interface, pity though that it seems less stable than some other browsers.  It is  excellent at printing webpages to .pdf, allowing on screen preview of re-sizing to optimise saved .pdf file.

Google Chrome has a lot of merit, but I find it below par for resizing web pages for printing to .pdf format as compared to IE9.  It does freeze from time to time however.

Opera has some merit, but Yahoo eMail says tell that this browser can't support it's latest upgraded format.   Won't print webpages to .pdf for me, so this is a serious limitation with Opera.

Firefox I used to use a lot but it tended to crash rather too much - I understand that the imminent new release / update will have a feature disabling add ons by default which I regard as a good feature as I attribute past problems to add ons.   Perhaps when the new release is out I will start using it more, critical will be whether it performs properly (as in how IE9 does) with printing webpages to .pdf.

Safari - I just don't like the interface required features are either absent or too well hidden for my liking.   Nevertheless, a useful "last resort" browser for playing with occasionally.

Certain websites work better with certain browsers (Opera is not good for Flickr as an example, but Google Chrome and IE9 are fine).  There is one banking website that doesn't seem to work for me with IE9, but works well in Opera or Google Chrome.

As a 1968 magazine article once said "It's horses for courses down Walsall way".

I used to be a IE defender ....

and was told in no uncertain terms by a few developers that I was being stupid and that their software would never work properly on an such an outdated browser (AOL is also based on IE). I resisted until my IT update this Spring and now use Chrome and Mozilla and they work perfectly on all sites including this one. They both re-size perfectly for printing as well.

It's only happens on AWEB -

I don't experience it on any other site - Our IT dept are fairly strict about updates and such so it's unlikely to be IE7 (or is it?)

It's only happened about 4 or 5 times today
