Slow repayments by HMRC

Slow repayments by HMRC

Didn't find your answer?

I have a few clients who were due a rebate following the filing of their 2011/12 SATR.

Rebates were requested on their returns and bank details provided.

I am now finding that a few have not yet received their rebate. I have also logged in online to request a rebate but still nothing has been paid.

Has anyone else had the same experience?

Cheers

There are various reasons why automatic repayments are withheld

Check if there are any amounts outstanding from previous periods as this can often cause problems even if the amounts are very small.

There is also the problem that HMRC won't issue a repayment if their has been a receipt within the last 30-days.

Another problem tends to be with Repayments Security, so it would be useful if you could contact the agent line and ask specifically if the repayment is being held by the "Repayment Security Office". There is a flag on HMRC systems showing this, but little more detail.

Another reason a payment can be delayed or withheld is if they consider the client to be a risk (e.g. fraudulent repayment, etc.) that is a harder one to gauge and I doubt you will get any clarity on the matter until you raise an official complaint and then, when you don't get an answer, escalate it to someone who can actually look at the problem.

Yes ... I too have found refunds taking a time but...

clients who didnt have a large refund came through within days of submission in January.

But I have one client who is still due a large (£8k+) refund - return submitted correctly and on time and it is now 2 months outstanding - just states 'pending' online.

I'm going to ring tomorrow (left it until after the Budget) and have a nag at HMRC refund people.

Thanks for replies

I rang today.

One was on hold because he had made a payment in January and this seems to block the system. Apparently a rebate will be processed very soon now that I have rung.

They had no idea why the other was held up but they will "look into it".

Total rebate due £11K
