When I had half a dozen team members a simple excel sheet controlled all the holidays together with a couple of emails each way.
I'm now up to 60 ish people and a bit lost.
Is there a simple cheap bit of software (online?) that could automate the holiday approval and recording process?

Always a bugbear
This may not be suitable - but we used a shared outlook calendar instead - with the only the finance/hr dept (me :)) being able to add or delete.
We just create an all day appointment with a title of the persons name.
Quick and easy to see who is already off.
In past lives I have used some quite expensive systems - but, like most software they required a lot of input but it was very hard to see useful outputs (such as who is already off that day) - hence the proliferation of wall planners around the site.
I also put the holidays into Sage payroll, which reports the balances on the payslips.
Granted this is not really 'automated' as such - but it seems to work for us.
Google is a wonderful search engine
It gave me this within milliseconds, and it looks to be exactly what you are seeking ... one click manager approval for requested holidays, and an overview of all absences.
Management-speak
Shirley, that does look a good one. They seem to be a little coy over the price, though, which doesn't bode well.
Steve, keep up. 'Holiday planning'? It's called 'Absence Management' now.
Breathe HR
We use Breathe HR they are very good, simple and flexible, all web based and pretty cheap for us too.
Taxwise
If you use Taxwise for your Fee Protection they offer a free HR system. HR online - it is really good but I stopped using it as there are only 3 of us here!
Staff Leave Planner
50 quid for a 60 employee one - we have used for last 4 or 5 years - works great
