Is state pension relevant to tax credits

Is state pension relevant to tax credits

Didn't find your answer?

Not really a question, just called HMRC to inform them of client's figures for working tax credits. Very helpful young lady took my call, but when I told her the client had £10k of state pension income she said that's ok we don't count that for tax credits. I asked if she was sure, so she consulted her supervisor but said no, that's correct we don't count state pension. I said in that case I've been miscalculating lots of claims for the last few years, but could she check again. After putting me on hold for a few minutes she came back and said "oh no you are right I do need that figure"!!!

She was also going to disregard the first £400 of other income, at which point I was looking for some cpd courses to quickly book myself on.

Apart from that she was one of the friendliest most helpful HMRC people I've dealt with recently!!!!

You are correct

You are right and the very helpful lady is wrong.

See page 21 of WTC2 booklet.

I would be inclined to follow up your phone call with a letter stating you tried to give them details of State pension but that you were told it was not included.

You are covering yourself - but warn your client that you think they may be overpaid TC's.

No wonder there is still loads of errors in the payments to claimants.

No problems

I'm not concerned about this client as I insisted that she took the pension figure, but how many times does this happen?
