Staying up to date

Staying up to date

Didn't find your answer?

A while ago I became a fully qualified accounting technician with the AAT. I was wonder, since I have been unable to find employment in this area so far, what do I need to keep an eye out for? What rules, regulations, websites or other areas do I need to stay on top of?

I cannot restrict the question to a certain area of accountancy since I don't know which area I will be working in. It could be in Tax, a ledger clerk, general all round assistant (coffee maker and envelope licker^^).

I try and have a general idea on whats going on with the IFRSs, IASs and the things that change each year, like tax rates and personal allowances.

What else should I stay on top of and where do you get your information.

This site

Most of us pay a significant amount of money in keeping up to date through professional development courses but these are not an option if you are not working. However if you keep reading posts on this site you will keep up to date as news items are posted on a regular basis. The HMRC site has  updates and you can subscribe to HMRC email with updates on  a weekly or monthly basis. You can also subscribe free to the Daily Link Newspaper provided by Mark Lee.

The AAT has a website and I expect that they have a members magazine all useful tools.

Watch for budget news as this keeps changes in mind.

In spite of all my efforts to keep up to date I sometimes miss things as I am sure others do

so do not worry too much your main problem is to get a job.

Good Luck

Local AAT branch

Have a look on the AAT website - I am sure you will find local AAT events at a very modest, even free, cost. That is certainly the case for the branch where I live.

CIOT local branches also run local events for a very modest charge (£5 round here) and you don't have to be a member.  They are usually tax related of course!   Look at their website.

A few options
~ Google "ACCA In Practice" - free and quite comprehensive newsletter.

~ Gabelle do a short weekly newsburst which is worth reading, tax related.

~ visit a few accountancy practice websites and sign up, where offered, for their newsletters.

Are you referring to A&B-monthly magazine or is this a separate one?"
