Sudden death of your accountant is not "reasonable excuse"

This thread degenerated into a bunfight.  But just to let everyone know that HMRC have caved in without bothering to even file papers in their defence.  I suspect they were just trying it on, but it's worth noting that three different levels of HMRC staff reviewed this case and still didn't quosh the fine until I went to the Tribunal.
