Suppressing the issue of Self Assessment returns

Suppressing the issue of Self Assessment returns

Didn't find your answer?

I have just had an argument with two HMRC telephone operators (aka "advisers") who swear blind that I cannot tell them that an SA Return is no longer required, go through a questionnaire with them and get the 2014 Return 'suppressed'. As I have done this many times before I wonder if this is a change of policy?

I told the first guy he did not know his job and he was quick off the mark - by the time I got his colleague on the phone he had already entered a nasty note about me.

So I rang back and quoted another client about whom I had written in on 5 January and for whom I had received a confirmation letter dated 22 January. In this case I was told that the client had been automatically reviewed and that my letter does not even appear on the system. Odd, since the other guys said that the automatic review happens on 19 February

I'm in limbo with one of mine

Phoned regarding a client on 16 January, all went fine and no return needs to be completed for 2013. Informed that this will be reviewed and letter to confirm will be sent within 4 weeks. So if the review results in a reinstatement of the requirement to file, presumably the return will be late by then and a penalty will apply?
