Tags Instead of Folders for Electronic Filing

Tags Instead of Folders for Electronic Filing

Didn't find your answer?

Instead of deciding where to file each of my documents (especially letters and notes of calls with clients and HMRC) I would like to be able to tag them. So for example, instead of deciding whether to file a letter under "General Correspondence" or under the relevant year end, I could tag it with both of these headings. In fact I am surprised Microsoft, has not moved from folders to tagging.

Does anyone know of any software that does this?

I can add tags to some file types

I can add flags to some file types (such as Word) via the explorer windows in Win7.

I do seem to recall though, that PDF files cannot have tags added to them, which is a shame,

Browse to the file in your computer directories.

Click (once) on the file to highlight it

A series of properties appear at the foot of the screen, which you can then enter.

I haven't set anything special up on my computer to enable this to happen, it just seems to be there.

good luck

Sharepoint allows you to tag documents.

@tom123

Ah yes, I see that now. I had never noticed it before. Can you then search by tag?

I see there is also a category. What is the difference between a category and a tag, when adding such labels to files?

Why not use document management software specially designed for fast and efficient retrieval...?

Document Management Software for One-Person Firms

I am a sole trader with no staff and I always thought of document management software as only useful for firms with more than one person. In addition, I expect it to be out of my price range. Can anyone recommend any very cheap software for a one-person firm, and would it do what I am looking for?

Electronic Files.

Hi There,

Rather than just tagging why don’t you look into a proper information management system?

DMS like DocuSoft, Invu, VC, FileCenter etc. are all designed on Windows platform technically uses the same Windows folder structure but with a database behind the scene to store indexes, data and give you a full control.

There are lot of hurdles if you are trying to use Windows Explorer and its interface to organise files and folder.

Good Luck

Not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, I can't work it how to use it. I am trying to find a file that "match[es] the name skeleton of A???.doc" but without success. I am looking for an attribute called "Name" which is probably my first problem. I can't find one so I am searching on Title with still no luck. I am getting error 1429.

Tags instead of folders

Can I just tell people that I have invented a way to do this now. It's a new kind of GUI that I call a Rainbow Interface. It organizes by tags - physical location becomes unimportant.

Full details are on my website www.everclearsystems.com

There's a file manager there (free) called FileRainbow (for Windows only, at the moment).

If you like it, please publicise it - that program is my shop window!

Tony Wicks
