government gateway summary

a tax overview is just the summary on government gateway in view account/tax years.  The theory is that the tax figure will agree with the software report's tax due figure.  So they shouldn't really need the SA302 if they're going down that route

This is correct.

However for a director/shareholder with salary and dividends who is in basic rate, the tax figure will always be Nil, so it can't really be crossreferenced too much, as Nil could mean any level of income, within reason!

quite

It's far from ideal, but was the solution presented by HMRC to the problem of them having to produce SA302s constantly.  At least they no longer ask why we can't run them off the government gateway ourselves.
