Tax return penalties

Hi

This morning I received a tax return penalty notice for a client's 2011 return - automatic £100 penalty for non-submission. The notice is dated 24 Jaunary, 7 days before the deadline. I have the submission receipt pre-dating the penalty notice.

To add to my woes, I also received 2 PAYE penalty notices for £400 (sounds familiar). These were for P35 non-submission where again I have the submission receipt. I also got these late in 2011 and HMRC agreed that they were not due.
The computers strike again making our life difficult.

Come on HMRC, sort IT out.

In paulhelliker's case, it turned out that the client's wife had signed a paper copy of the electronically filed return and sent it in to HMRC.

Have you been able to find out any reason for the SA return yet?

It is highly unlikely that HMRC have issued penalties early.

Either

A paper return has been sent to HMRC after 31 Oct.

Or

HMRC have a record that they have closed after 31 Oct, this would register as a paper return and a penalty would be issued.

Or

HMRC have logged a paper return after 31 Oct to the wrong record.

Contact HMRC and try to find out what has happened their end.
