Terminal Losses - Online filing

Terminal Losses - Online filing

Didn't find your answer?

Dear All

I am hoping someone can help me.

I have a client who terminated his self-employment and has terminal losses in 2013/2014.  The calculation of these is fine but I am at a loss as to where this information goes on the online Self Assessment.  I submitted the return with the loss included in the return but have received a letter from HMRC stating I need to fill in Additional information Box 15 and 17 for the losses to be carried back. I cant find these boxes??  I have tried putting the information into the Income Tax losses section which is the only part I can find bu it doesn't seem to have a place for terminal losses to be carried back.

Does anybody know where I can find these boxes on the online Form??

Thanks in advance

Several boxes 15 and 17

Looking at tax return pages SA100 (main core return), SA103S (short) and SA103F (full) I can see several instances of boxes 15/17 none of which appear to be relevant to carrying losses back!

When I've carried losses back (box numbers valid on 2012 return...) it was box 78 on SA103F that was completed plus on the tax calculation page(TC1) then a prior year repayment amount in box 14 and an explanatory note in text box 16.

PS. Box 15 on the main return (SA100) is tax advisor's name and box 17 is advisor's address.

NB. I did NOT use HMRC's online service to file the above SA return, I used commercial software.

On the full Return

I entered the loss in box 79 on page SEF4.

And made the claim in box 103 on page SEF 6.

The claim referred back to the figure in box 79 and detailed the tax years to which I was setting it off.

EDIT: I suspect that HMRC are referring to boxes 15 and 17 on Tax Calculation page 2 (TC2)
