Training expenses

My client has been self employed for 18 years in the developing and implementing communication & campaign strategies in the not-for-profit sector: international development and fair trade.

She is now studying for a MSC communication innovation and development, which is apparently in the same field

One of her clients UNICEF requires its consultants and staff to have an MSc, which is one of the reasons she undertook the course.

Now would this be considered updating existing skills and therefore allowable or is this acquiring a new expertise or knowledge and therefore dissallowable.

I believe this is a very grey area, what are your thoughts?
