I'm trying to value an unquoted company and would like to know what the multiples are for comparable unquoted company sales currently and in the past. I'm wondering if anyone knows a (free) source of current and historical data of this nature. I'd prefer data on unquoted companies/business but a source of data on quoted companies particularly if it includes sectors information would help too. I'm using a number of valuation techniques but would like to be able to compare my results with real world examples.

The answer to your question about multiples for quoted companies, and sectors, is easy - they are in the FT every day.
For unquoted companies the only free source I know is the BDO Private Company Price Index. Another useful source is CorpFin, but that's not free.
But don't rely on the BDO data
In my experience it's not representative of the real world of small company transactions.
In reality you are looking for something that doesn't exist.
I agree that the BDO index has its limitations. On occasion, not sure about currently, it has concluded that unquoted multiples are higher than quoted multiples. But certainly worth a look.
