I have a client who submits a UK tax return for reporting her UK rental income. She worked in USA for a few years and is currently working in Hong Kong.
She has been told (not professionally of course) that she can claim a refund on the tax she paid in USA.
She is coming to sign her UK tax return on 11th December and would appreciate my advice. I have told her I have no expertise in this area and cannot give her advice. However,
Where can I go to get an overview of the USA taxation system? And who would I refer her to to get expert advice in this area?

Is she a US citizen or green card holder?
David Treitel will be along soon, I am sure :)
You will want to ask the same questions you would be asking as part of your CDD (customer due diligence) checks; so you will want to ask your client of all citizenships she has and if she has ever had a US green card or is a covered expatriate. Once you can explain her connections to the United States any liability to US tax or reporting can then be addressed.
