Virus Alert - VERY realistic aimed at acountants

Didn't find your answer?

Anyone else had this?  Looks almost real, but the "to" field is not us, its a "BCC" so must be going out to a large mail group.

Dodgy looking .doc file attached to the email I am not clicking!

Hello

Can u offer me a quotation for my personal Tax Return (2013-14) including the following questions?

I work in the UK for a US company. I was granted the opportunity to invest in some shares in my employer a few years back. I invested a starting sum (around 5k). Last April 2014 the shares were all cashed in (non-optionally) and I received back around £15k. 10k profit, very nice. But very confusing from a tax perspective. I did not receive the funds back through my payroll (I just got a cheque in the post) so the amount was not taxed.

1 - I assume I do need to pay income tax on this, right? Do I pay on the difference (10k) or the total received (15k)?
2 - Being a US company, I did also pay tax on the sale in the US which was taken before I received the funds. Is there any way I can claim that back ever?
3 - Do I also need to be GCT on this as well as income tax?? I didn't so but now I'm starting to wonder if I do.

Please find attached my calculation (business card attached as well).

Kind Regards,

Sorry, but ...

... any accountant that falls for that deserves everything they get.

I've had this one and another from someone looking for an apprenticeship.  They do look perfectly realistic and have a .doc attachment.

Fortunately my anti virus picked up on this and prevented any problems

Interesting!

It appears that a number of AWEB members have received these emails.

It looks were much as if they have been sent to a list of email addresses FOR ACCOUNTANTS culled from somewhere & that they have apparently been received from different senders (apparently is the key word).

One thing they have in common is that there is no named person in the "To" field of the email.  Also of course the emails carry an attachment.

The timing, just before 31 January, is interesting too.

It seems to be a reasonably intelligent email shot presumably in the hope of collecting email addresses or other data from accountants' computers.
