What are we calling cloud now?

Didn't find your answer?

So how are we defining the cloud now?

I've just clicked the link in the accountingweb email bulletin purporting to be the "full list" of cloud accounting software being exhibited at AccountEx. Quite apart from the glaring omissions from the list, it seems to just be a list of the usual desktop software which is no doubt being "hosted" in the cloud. Sorry aweb, but I just think that calling normal desktop software that is remotely hosted "cloud software" is misleading. There was also a recent news article doing a round-up of "runners and riders" in the cloud race which again listed desktop software as cloud software, just because it could be run on a hosted desktop. That article also completely ignored some cloud providers. Come on aweb, we know it's the big established software firms that pay the bills, but let's have a bit more clarity over what is meant by cloud - if we are saying that anything that can be hosted is cloud software then surely the term cloud software has no meaning at all.

(p.s. I would have posted this is in the cloud accounting discussion group, but as that group is about to be culled with all the other discussion groups I have posted it here).

Semantics
I would include all remotely hosted software as cloud. I dislike the term 'cloud'. It's a vague buzzword.

Remotely hosted or cloud, to me there is no practical difference in any way.

Other criteria are that they wander and are lonely and are full of rising (but cooling) hot air-or maybe that is just politicians.

Access anywhere
The purpose (or at least one of them) is to access your applications and data anywhere you have a computer and a connection. So I don't see why it matters whether that's RDP or an app on your PC that connects to a remote SQL Server or web service.
