What course to take?

What course to take?

Didn't find your answer?

Hello guys, I want to change my career/job. I am currently working in JP Morgan as Porter (person who set up table and chairs for meeting, move items from one floor to another floor) and I want to improve my career and go to uni. What course should I take if I'm interested in doing P60's or tax for individuals and also bookeeping and auditing? Thanks

mature student???

Hi

If you are over 21 you should be able to apply to do AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) at college without any entry requirements.  It will be tough, but you will know if it's for you after you've been studying a year or so.  This should probably be your starting point, I think.

The college courses are usually a couple of evenings a week plus home work, but as you are working they will charge full price.  If you are determined, you could maybe pay for the first year or so and see how you get on.  After that, you could ask your firm to sponsor you???  If you don't ask you don't get, and worse scenario is they say 'no'.

good luck

Agree with the above

I recently recruited an assistant and let me tell you this : I don't value graduates one bit!

Those with AAT, or those with some applicable experience, had a massive upper hand over the graduates I interviewed. Both set of candidates were keen but the AAT studiers clearly knew much more about the subject.

See if you can study it as a part-time course for free (I did years a go) and then do your best to get a job in the industry or even loosely related to industry / practice. It's a tough job market nowadays so you'll have to do everything to stand out. Best of luck to you.

Start with AAT and look for a relevant job, it may be easy to get a relevant job once you have enrolled on or started the AAT course because it already shows you're committed to it rather than other candidates who are waiting for an employer to pay for it for them.

When you've nearly completed AAT it'll give you a better idea of where you want to head next and future plans should be a bit easier. I would try to get a job in a practice because that's a better "learning" environment and it's easier to move from practice to industry than industry to practice further down the line.

Probate and will advice

I am very interested in the possibility, as I understand it, that ICAEW will shortly be able to authorise firms or individuals to undertake simple probate and will services. Does anyone have suggestions as to the additional training I may require and any organisations that provide online material/ courses ?
