What to do next

Didn't find your answer?

Good Afternoon,

I am 21 years old and did not attend university. When I was younger I thought working part time was better, I can see that it is not enough.

I want to do ACCA but I have been advised I would not be able to join straight away I would have to do an AAT course. I have heard that there are many more entry routes besides AAT which I could possibly do.

What would be the best option for me now? I really want to do ACCA and would work part time and pay for it as I go along.

Any advice would be great.

Thank You

Try to get a junior position
I was 21 when I started working at a three partner accountancy practice as a junior. Like you I didn't go to university. I did 2 years AAT (my A levels meant I was exempt from the first year) and then I went on to do my ACA with the same firm.

The experience I gained working while studying was invaluable & meant that I sailed through the AAT exams. The AAT also helped ease me into ACA.

I did take a pay cut when I first started working there but you have to have long term goals. You are then set up for the future should you decide to move on or set up on your own.

Straight for ACCA
I'm sure you can start ACCA immediately, you just won't get the early paper exemptions that a university graduate or AAT would do.

If you know that accountancy is definitely for you then go straight for ACCA, but if you're not sure and want to try it initially then start with AAT, it'll be cheaper and a little less intensive.

Good luck with it.

I am sure there is a qualification which is very similar to AAT called CAT.

CAT is run by the ACCA and it may offer a better transition to the full blown ACCA exams as a result.

I agree with the above posts, get letter out to nearby accountancy practices asking for any openings.  Working in an accountancy firm will be a big help to your studies.

Best of luck
