when a charity makes a donation....

Didn't find your answer?

Charity makes ad hoc large donations to a cancer charity.  How is this categorised in charity SORP accounts? Ie it is not cost of generating voluntary income, cost of charitable activities, cost of trading etc?  I cant seem to find an appropriate expense code.

Many thanks

Seems pretty obvious to me...

If its charitable activity is making grants, then the payment of a grant is cost of charitable activity isn't it? SoRP 2005 para 189 refers

Edit: often there is disclosure in a note and sometimes accounting policy for recognition of the expeniditure (on payment or on agreement with the recipient)

yes i was thinking that

but then the sub-categories, I use sage for this and there doesn't seem to be a suitably named expenditure code within cost of charitable activities. Best I can see is " activity 1 direct - other costs"

Why not add one if it's a regular occurence? It's your chart of accounts, and IMHO time spent getting the CoA right is rarely wasted
