I think what you need now is a lawyer.

Not an accountant.

Police

Have you tried the Police....they are normally the best option to deal with fraud?

Or possibly straight to the police. But then to a lawyer for advice on civil recovery.

Reporting the accountant to his professional body, if he has one, should be the least of your concerns now. There will be plenty of time for that later, if appropriate.

Your options

You can report this to the authorities via Action Fraud.  But remember that the responsibility of the police is primarily to investigate crime & apprehend criminals - not to recover stolen money etc for victims.

You can see a solicitor & ask him to try to recover your money.

You can see a new accountant & ask him to fend off HMRC for you while you try to recover the money so you can pay them & ask him also to check what you really do owe.

If the rogue accountant was a member of a professional body you can contact that body & ask them to expel him from membership.  But again their responsibility is to discipline their member - not to help you get your money back.

Check any emails, their website, or letterhead that you received from them. If they say "CA" then go to Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland, "ACA" is ICAEW, "ACCA" is ACCA Global, and CTA is "Chartered Institute of Taxation".
