Write an article on latest tax changes for landlords.

Write an article on latest tax changes for...

Didn't find your answer?

Is anyone interested in writing an article explaining the tax situation for landlords (restricted tax relief for finance costs, the 3% increase in SDLT etc.) and giving some examples? Our own accountant doesn't want to do it because he needs extra insurance to do so.  Is anyone here willing? Please either reply through here or email me on [email protected]. Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the heads up. I had a brief look at their website but didn't see anything relevant. I suffer from congenital blindness and stupidity though, so I may just have missed it! I'd be grateful if you point me to anything they've written please?

.

Insurance my [***], your current accountant doesn't want to do it because:

1. It will take several hours of their professional time at a very busy time

2. We simply don't know enough about the 3% to write about it yet

3. You are not willing to pay

4. They deem the advertising value from a byline in no way compensates points (1) and (3)

People may write for free on large sites which big volumes of traffic, especially if they are just starting up, but not small ones.

Was my thoughts. Well said.

Fair enough. We do have 30,000 or landlord customers, so I thought it was a fair quid pro quo.

Many of your 30,000 customers will already have retained accountants. There' not much in this for the author to be honest unless there is a fee for writing the piece.

Difficult to write about before legislation has been published

I do write a lot on this topic - but for a fee. Are you expecting to pay journalist rates for the article?

If you need information fast you could start with reading the articles already posted on this site such as:

Huge tax bills ahead for landlords

Osbornes reforms send property in a spin

and read the Govt policy paper on interest restriction.

Unfortunately we do not yet have draft legisation on either the changes to interest relief or the SDLT supplementary charge. When we do have draft legislation it may be easier to  write about these issues.

I am happy to write an article based on speculation and guess-mongering if that would help. I would use for my example the landlord of a formidable castle in a distant and magical land. It would have dragons and princesses to make it a gripping read, and I would be happy to illustrate it. For colour I'll cast George Osborne as an evil Duke who blights the land with savage taxation.

It wouldn't be cheap, so I'd expect a sizeable advance. I can get the first draft to you by April.

Given the dragon in the story

Given the dragon in the story surely any character called George really needs to be a saint. Given GO is unlikely to qualify under such a description I think you really need to rename the evil Duke who blights the land as Gideon, thus avoiding any conflict within the minds of the readers.

Some quality replies so far, thank you. I always assumed accountants had no sense of humour. How wrong could I have been :-D

We have a great sense of humour around these parts. But sometimes our humour is suppressed by difficult clients and those that just want something for nothing.

Whether it is 'something for nothing' is debatable. However worry not, as one of you has come forward to do it. Thanks again!

Why would you need "extra insurance" (or indeed any insurance) to write an article? Presume the most basic of disclaimers would rule out any risk. Apparently not.

@the OP to be fair for 30k genuine landlords I might change my mind on the trade off if I needed the work.

The RLA gets 20,000 subscribers to its magazine in comparison, albeit they are all properly audited, and web numbers tend to be a lot more slippery....

@ireally....

fair point although I would ask, if you are 'that big' then why wouldn't you pay for a professional to do the work but also imagine the conversation...

Client -  "wow great article, was thinking I might use this guy in future, how do you find him to deal with?"

OP - "oh, don't actually use him...here is the details of the guys we actually use...they are very good!"

not quite the ringing endorsement you were hoping for I guess.

@DJKL yes of course you are right. The despicably greedy Lord Gideon it shall be, riding roughshod over the downtrodden property owners in his quest for wealth and power. Hiss and boo!

Get the script right and it may be suitable as a pantomime.

You might consider introducing some side characters, say Shapps, Feldman and Clarke if you want topicality.
