Registering online

Registering online

Didn't find your answer?

I am sorry for asking such a straightforward question but I am having no joy from HMRC helplines or local offices.

I'm trying to prise myself into the 21st century and register online as an agent. The HMRC website indicates that I need an agent ID before I can do anything else. I phoned the online helpdesk and they said I needed to contact my local tax office to obtain the agent ID. I then telephoned my local tax office and they said I needed to register via the HMRC website. I'm going round in circles. And it's hot. And I haven't got a fan in the office.

Would somebody please let me have a short note of the procedures I need to follow. Also, does one ID cover all the online services or do I need several.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Steve

It's a pain..

..to contact your local office but if you can get through to the Agent Maintainer Department then they will be able to tell you.

If you have recently received Agent copies of your client's statements of account then your agent reference appears on the cover sheet and will look something like A1234B.

Agent for SA or PAYE?
When we originally registered as an agent, it was for SA and the agent code is the one printed on the covering letter for all those statements we received this month (which did not show the second POA due on 31st July!).

For PAYE, try selecting Do it online PAYE, then when you get the Do you have a User ID and Password? screen, select FAQ under No, then How do I register as an Agent?, then Agent Reference Service under PAYE. That takes you to a screen to enter your name and address; it tells you to stay online after submitting your details because your agent reference will be returned to the screen. I hope it works!

Many thanks....
Thanks for your helpful replies. I did eventually get a CT reference from the local tax office but they couldn't give me an SA reference (aaargh). But thanks to you, I now know that I need to look at my white SA statements.

It's Friday afternoon, I'm going to spend the next couple of hours seeing if I can actually get registered and then I'm off to a nice quiet country pub and try to forget - everything.
