remote access and use

remote access and use

Didn't find your answer?

Is it possible to use various applications remotely - for example I would idealy like to use Quickbooks and a payrol package remotely on occasion. Is there any software capable of this?

Try logmein
Depends what you mean Toni, but I use a product called LogMeIn (www.logmein.co.uk) which is a secure program which allows me to access a PC in my office from my notebook when I'm on the road. I run Sage accounts and payroll, MS Office and otehr applications loaded on the office PC. I can print locally or remotely and transfer files between PCs. Costs about $70 per target PC per annum.
They also have other remote products such as backup.
It's all on the website.

VNC
As we want remote access only rarely, we use the free version of VNC from realVNC which is not encrypted, but you can pay $30 (£14) for the "personal" version which is. You need to have your office computer running with its monitor turned on because VNC works by copying the target computer's display and transmitting your keystrokes and mouse movements back from your remote computer. This makes the operation pretty quick over a broadband connection because you are not transferring vast amounts of program and data over the connection.

Yes
We use Microsoft Business Server 2003. This allows you to access your computer in the office remotely via setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network). IT also allows you to use the printers etc attached to the server.

I would suggest you contact an IT company near you to help set it up.

internet cafe
I was interested in the VNC program suggested by Euan, but i realized that it's only useful when you can load the viewer program on to the remote PC or perhaps on your own laptop (if you can access the internet with it). But I would like to be able to work on my desktop machine when I am away, by sitting in an internet cafe, or possibly at a client's office, and accessing my machine. i believe GoToMyPC works in this way. Does anyone know more about this?

GoToMyPC
The merit of VNC and similar programs is that they are free or a cheap one-off cost, but you do have to load them on the remote viewing computer as well as the target computer. GoToMyPC is an online subscription service accessible from any internet connection, cafe, etc., but it costs £12 a month.

GoToMyPc v Logmein
I have used Goto for a number of years now and it has been excellent, however I have just cancelled the renewal as it would cost $389pa for 4 pc's.

I had been trying the free version of logmein but moved to the pro version as it has a special offer of $200 for 5 pc's!

I think Goto's interface is better but now my colleagues can login using their own email addresses, they become secondary users.

Obviously you have to leave the target pc's on and connected to the internet (screen can be off) . Furthermore, I can use via my laptop and t-mobile usb modem without worrying about exceeding my monthly allowance as it only sends the screen signal, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!
