Remote Access to IRIS

Remote Access to IRIS

Didn't find your answer?

I need to regularly access our IRIS software on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 in our office from my home.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this over a VPN or using thin client approach.

Thin client and IRIS
Thin client connections are the way to go, however you may run into a slight problem with server 2003SBS. Microsoft took out the option of running Terminal Services in "application" mode in 2003SBS. This only leaves "administration" mode which is NOT suitable for running programs at all, only for using the admin functions on the server itself.

Assuming you can set up a VPN (or already have one) then I would recommend using RDP, to take control of a machine in the office when you are at home, normally this would be your normal work machine (assuming you do not have a laptop and take it home with you!).

RDP is built into XP Pro and is really easy to use, if you wanted to speak to someone at IRIS, give the Hardware Support Dept a call, we can talk you through the basics.

Thin clients!!!!
bob, aare you the guy in the TV advert, who does the Report befor asking the lass out for a dinner date when he is off sick?
I am not going to comment on the other response from Ian! He has access to far too much technology!!! Some os us have to use Fax at 9600bits and a dial-up modem at an average speed of 48k.
I wonder if I could make use of that extra port on my Sky+ satellite dish, now that they have brought out a 160 box that can store 80 hours of TV progs?

VPN
I have a vpn from home and other satellite office running on SBS2000 using terminal services. The vpn runs through a Draytek Vigor router costing £200, and provides broadband speeds, depending on the spec of your broadband links and workstations I can say that it is sometimes quicker than sitting at a desk in the office! If you can establish a connection to your server and are looking for a low cost solution try Realvnc a free product.

There are lots of ways of achieving this, depends on your budget and skill levels really.

Interesting in hearing how you get on.
