I need to be able to transfer data from Sage Line 50 format to Instant Accounts Plus. Can I take the Line 50 backup file and simply use this to restore into IA? My ultimate aim is to get all the transaction data as well as account balances but I would be prepared to accept taking on the trial balance only plus Debtors and Creditors ledger details.

Manually input balances

Like one of the people below has already stated (and of course yourself), you are better off putting on opening balances with outstanding items. Normally, people will upgrade from Instant to Line 50, which has added functionality and fields. Data conversion is straight forward. Very rare is it to find the reverse. You will find that you are unable to find some of the data in Instant accounts, simply because a field that existed in Line 50 does not exist in Instant Plus. E.g. the department field that exists in Line 50 does not exist in Instant accounts, so if you want to report on transactions that had a similar department code, you will not be able to. Similarly, if you use order processing, then certain information will not be viewable.

As long as the backup is taken on the same Version of the accounts programme then yes the backup will restore without any problems.i.e a backup taken on Line 50 Version 6 will restore onto Instant V6 and vice Versa
Careful....
Just want to emphasise the point about the respective versions. I tried to restore a Line 50 version 8 backup file on to an older version of Instant and it began asking for a non existant password which disabled use of the software.
With compatible versions it works fine.
Line 50 will not restore on Instant

You can restore a Sage Instants Accounts Disk into Sage Line 50 software but you cannot do it the other way round as a lot of the features on Line 50 would not fit into the Instant Accounts format. You may find that you have to manually input the TB and the debtors and creditors.
