Seeking advice on setting up a Accountancy Business

Seeking advice on setting up a Accountancy...

Didn't find your answer?

I am someone who has graduated two years ago and has recently completed Part 2 of the ACCA's Professional Syllabus. In my current position as a Trainee Accountant, I have become reasonably fluent in preparing accounts using Sage Final Accounts Production (FAP) and in using Sage Line50.

I am reasonably confident, that initially I can acquire 30 '50 clients, primarily from catering trade. I was hoping that I would do the bookkeeping and accounts, and then seek assistance from a qualified accountant in preparing tax and VAT returns.

I am seeking advice on two issues. Firstly, whether a qualified accountant would want to provide me with this unusual service. And secondly, whether my experience would satisfy the ACCA requirements for membership.

I would welcome advice

Where does book-keeping end and accountancy strat?
If you cannot do the VAT, you should not be holding yourself out as a book-keeper.
Get fully qualified and some experience. You will do much better in the long run than spending the rest of your life as a non qualified book-keeper.

Yes and no
Possible, yes
Wise, no

Just stick in for the rest of your training. The dull bit soon passes. Then you can have some fun.

Setting up in business
1) I do not see why you could not find a qualified accountant to provide a support service.

2) If you were going to try to qualify eg as an ACCA, you would only be allowed to offer book-keeping type services and would not be able to advertise yourself as ACCA etc.

Starting a business now would probably prevent you qualifying because you would not gain wide enough experience or for long enough. You need fairly wide pre and post-qualification experience in order to gain a practicing certificate.

Working for yourself will not provide the experience you require.

I believe that you are allowed to offer book-keeping services, so you could potentially start building a business on a part-time basis whilst still training.

See the ACCA rule book and the experience record that you should already be completing.

Fun, Knuckles
That's the time when your face goes into a strange contortion and your mouth turns up at the edges. In extreme cases your mouth opens an an odd gargling noise comes out. This is called laughter.

I'm not suggesting that you working life has to be an unmitigated hoot, but if you don't enjoy at least some of what you do, it's time to change what you do. I have, lots of times.

FUN
OK Neil maybe I was being a little over cynical but it does seem to me that it has become increasingly difficult to get fun out of the job on a day to day basis. Must be getting old! Probably time I ran away to the circus.
