Small business book keeping

Small business book keeping

Didn't find your answer?

I run a small relatively new business. At the moment my sales ledger is taken care of by an access database and I proscess the purchase ledger manually i'm Looking to get my first book keeping package. I want something simple, a cash in cash out system and hopefully that will take info from the access database for the sales ledger.

Can anyone recomend a good bit of software to use?

DOSH
The simplest cashbook I've seen has to be DOSH. I've recommended this to a number of clients and they love it. Around £50 I believe.

Check our reviews page
Gregory,

If it will be of any help, AccountingWEB has recently been reviewing a crop of accounting applications for small businesses. You can find them all on our reviews page.

If you are interested in following up the online accounting options, there is further material on our software on demand page.

Good luck with your hunt,

winweb
Apparently free so worth a trial at least?

Its online and so your accountant can access remotely etc.

I had a brief look at it and it seems fine for small start ups and they are improving functionality all the time.

There are better online packages out there but can cost a lot.

Other options I would recommend are:

MYOB
Quick Books
TAS Books
Sage Line 50 (slightly less user friendly than the above).

Cash is King?
We do one of the better online accounting solutions - Twinfield. Ours would make good sense if your accountant was involved, but less so if you were doing it by yourself. Call me if you are interested.

Otherwise, I've seen Cash is King recommended elsewhere for this kind of requirement. It looks like it would suit the simple approach that you want, and costs £50 a year from Four Software.

look at Turbocash
Turbocash is free (opensource) and full of heavyweight features.
Also very good value for money is sub £100 Business-ware (make sure you include the "-" if you look for it with a search engine).

Do$h & VT Transaction
We use Do$h for our cash based clients. It is very easy to set up, and consists of money in and money out. The end format is easily transferred to the self assessment tax return. Sales invoices cannot be produced in this package, but there is an add on sales invoice package and a payroll package if required.

For clients with sales or purchase ledgers we use VT Transaction. Good as it is based on Excel spreadsheets, and items can be moved around easily. Again, sales invoices cannot be produced on this osftware.

We also use Quickbooks and Sage Instant/Sage Line 50 for clients that require more information, such as producing their own sales invoices, stock control and purchase orders.

Quickbooks is a little more involved, but quite understandable once set up. Sales invoices and so on can be produced with this package.

We find clients using Sage Instant or Sage Line 50 require some bookkeeping knowledge. Sales invoices, purchase orders and so on can be produced. Correcting errors can take some time, and you could end up with large accountancy fees if this is not used correctly.

Small Business Book-keeping
The ABC Accounts Book has a computerised version.

So many Computer Packages have been written by Programmers rather than Book-keepers/Accountants, that to use the highly publicized software programs is over-kill.

As an accountant in practice, I devised this simple book (back in 1979): "it's as easy as ABC". All my clients are given a free book (£8 to outsiders). The time needed in the preparation of Financial Accounts is greatly economised - and the added bonus is that the records are easily proven (to bank statements). A huge defence against HMRC's allegation of "not keeping a proper record".
