I went to my local post office at 5:00 p.m. yesterday and Graham behind the counter said, "Hang on David I have a letter for you."
After a trip into the back office he returned with a second-class letter suitably franked. "This was posted 20 minutes ago," he said.
Is this a record for speed of delivery of a second class letter?
(Better still the letter had a cheque in it for me!)

excellent service?
given that you collected it it must fail the delivery test - but it does sound like excellent customer service, which is something the post office does not often seem to receive plaudits for!
Parcels to "wrong" address
Sounds like an excellent postie - using his brains rather than following the inflexible system.
We have a similar "arrangement" with our posties (but don't tell anyone). My office is close to home (1/2 mile). If the parcel van driver has a parcel for home and no-one is in, he brings it to the office, and vice-versa. He even does this with special and recorded items. He asked us if we were happy doing this and told us he wasn't actually allowed to. So happy customers (we don't have a wasted 30 minute journey to the sorting office to collect) and happy postie - he doesn't have to take the items back and leave cards. Another result for common sense over systems.
Atypical
You're lucky. I'm still waiting for a recorded delivery item that was posted on 21 June.
