We are thinking of taking on an ACCA trainee, and have a few questions:

1) what level of study leave is normal?

2) Is it standard to have a written agreement with some undertaking by the employee to pay back training if they leave within a specified time of qualification?

3) What do people do with regard to paying for resits? Is it standard for the student to pay for these and take the time of as unpaid leave/holidays?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

5 days per exam plus exam days is more than enough
When I completed my ACCA exams I received 5 days per exam plus the exam day itself which was enough to get me thorugh the exams.

6 weeks?!
Wish I'd had that! It's up to each company. Normally you'd expect to get the day of each exam free plus anything between a couple of days & a week off per exam. If you're offering day release (or allowing it but with time made up) then I'd say less time. Studying from home in their own time would lend itself to a few more days.
Don't pay for resits - no incentive!
Yes to a written agreement - they pay you back a proportion of what you've contributed depending on when they leave. Doesn't just have to apply to qualifying - should be leaving whenever as could leave with one paper left otherwise.

None!
As a trainee in practice I had ZERO paid study leave, and that wasnt that long ago.

What I did have was a very very good salary and no restriction regarding paying back time off etc. If I had study time it was taken out of holiday leave or worked back as overtime.

As crazy as it sounds it seriously motivated me to study hard and achieve all I did - ACCA/AAT and ATT in my own time.

One subject - 4 days leave
My co give 4 days for each subject attempt for relevant courses only.

Non-relevant course, staff pays himself.

Staff also pays for relevant courses which are not approved for refund.

Approved refund course are subject to two attempts per subject. Further to that, staff pays for all costs involved.

I'm in practice.

I get the morning of the exam (and have to come in in the afternoon).

I get 5 days per exam before each, I have to do all my studying/courses/revision days in my own time/weekends.

I have to pay for any resits but can't find any place in my contract where it says I have to pay back tuition fees or anyting if I leave quickly. Which is just as well as my wages here are hardly dazzling.

And to cap it all I have to sit through classes surrounded by people going on about how people in practice basically get months off, can come to classes in the week, get well paid and full support... I just smile and keep quiet.

practice or
industy? I take it the 6 weeks is practice, as I have worked in both my finals while in industry were - have the exam days and one day for all three exams as study leave. The tuition and revision although paid by my employer with a tie in letter was at weekends.

Practice
We are in practice, I don't see why practice study leave should be so much more than in Industry though. Are the times you have all given including the time given for the day release courses? We have looked into this and these are half a day per week for 10 - 12 weeks per paper!

If you're giving a half day a week per subject then I'd give no more than the exam day plus one other day, practice or industry.

To answer your query
The study leave per annum should be six weeks.

Normally you bind the employee in the contract of no less then one year.

Resits are not financed by the company/ partnerships.

Generosity will repay you
I was given fully paid study leave to attend block release courses for ACA and to do the exams. My employer also paid the course fees, the exam fees and travel costs.

I failed 2 papers on first sitting, so for the re-sits I was given leave only for the exam days - and in the first instance I paid the fees, but my employer refunded them to me when I passed.

It's now coming up to 4 years since I qualified - and I'm still with the same employer who put me through the ACA.

Treat your trainees generously and you will earn their loyalty.

I'm pretty sure I never got any study leave, other than the paid courses and a few days before the exams. That was about 5 years ago.

Resits are usually paid by the student, thats fairly standard I think. Plus time off to be taken as holiday/unpaid.

Listen to me all of you, my important opinion
Examination got a lot of pressure, so much is the overall pressure, people get high blood pressure and commit suicide.

I know one best way of all views to calm down these pressure points causing suicide.

I know best is give 10 days each subject. Reason can be given is all staff in the department of yours can always definitely pass without fail.

Then, all the definite pass without failures make company like your one very famous and popular so everbody in this world want join your company because very high pass or no failures.

But this act got a bit of problem for your company. All pass and without fail, you must also get to promote them and be managers. So, plan big for your company to enjoy the sure passes of managers without fail and let them maintain into your company and your company can grow very big too. Then, your big company become very popular and famous. Everybody want to join into your company with pleasure.

What will be if all the surely pass and without fail managers get to find jobs in another company or go away after passing without fail.

This side-effecting headache is the best cause for the situation enjoy in your big and famous company when you surely practice this definite pass and without fail situation.

You can win and you can lose, so up to you to enjoy which is better onwards onto the far futue to be thought off right away tonite after reading my important advice for all to consider and know without fail.
