Subsistence
Posted by valeriedalgleish on Thu, 02/07/2009 - 15:20
My client is mainly based in Europe, up until now I have been putting through all her receipts for subsistence, converting to GB pounds (historical) no VAT. Now she says all the rest of her colleagues are putting through a set rate of £10 per day for subsistence, with no receipts and wants me to do the same - is that legal, am I allowed to do this ? Her registered place of work is in the UK

Do you mean for tax claim? Or do you mean claim submitted to employer? And who pays you?
If just for UK tax return then fine but if you mean in the claim presented to overseas boss then I would ask her boss if he is happy to do that. The employer based abroad will probably be relying on you to vet claims.
If you are working purely for the employee with no link to the employer then you might decide just to submit to the boss as she requests. But you do risk some upset and possibly loss of referrals from the employer for anyone else they might employ in the UK.
