"Temporary" NI no on SA files???

"Temporary" NI no on SA files???

Didn't find your answer?

I attempted to submit a client's SA return for 2006 online yesterday and it was rejected. The online helpdesk referred me to the client's local tax office who told me that the client's NI no. had temporariliy been changed to a different number on the system while the NIC office 'looked into a few things'. They suggested I delayed filing for about 6 weeks until the correct NI no. is back on the system. Has anyone else ever come across this??? [It sounds like nonsense to me - I wonder if it's actually one of the NIC records we heard had been'lost' by the NIC office a while ago?]

Just to add..

An 'official' temporary NI number will be in a format similar to the following:

76 K4 06 58

As oppose to just being issued with a different NI number in the usual format (AA123456A).

Could be
- A stuff up by their computers
- Someone else is using the same nino
- It's someone elses NINO
- Some kind of key personal information is wrong somewhere, like a date of birth, making it look like two people
- Your client has two SA records

1 is insolvable , but 2 happens surprisingly frequently and may be worth looking into to make sure, especially if your client moves a lot, stopped and recommenced self employment, or etc.

To check just phone and give the correct NINO when they ask for the UTR. If they get a record from it...

I have had the same..

Don't expect the old number to be resurrected any time soon.

1 year on and still using 'temporary' number despite many requests.
