Time tracking software for accountants

Time tracking software for accountants

Didn't find your answer?

 Hi,

We are currently developing a timesheet system and would like to make it as useful for accountants as possibly.  To do that, we’d like to know how you would like to track your time as an accountant and if there’s anything that you dislike about current systems that you are using.

Our current implementation has two ways of tracking time.  One is automatic through a tracker and the other is manual with a stopwatch.  What would be best for you?

Thanks,
Etienne

Know Your Market

Hi Etienne

Tricky one this as you can't please everyone and could end up pleasing nobody. This is a very personal thing and I have tried many systems over the last 15 years - from client management suites to freeware to Mac widgets and I always come back to an Open Office spreadsheet set with a few filters. Apart from that I run a timer on the dashboard of the Mac - and that's it.

As a sole practitioner, the larger programmes put me off because they are such a fag to learn and had lots of functions I was never interested in - or were meant for a larger practice.

So I would suggest that your market may be fragmented , viz -

- sole practitioners who just want to record time, billing and get a debtors report

- managers who want to analyse staff activity

- practitioners who want to integrate the time and billing function with a general client database

Not sure where your development is heading but I would say key elements would be - a good clean interface; simple to learn and use; flexible data entry; easy data import from other applications.

Probably the market is for the smallest practices as even modestly sized firms seem increasingly to commit to very exoensive 'suites' for practice managment these days and after the huge cost they are unlikely to want to change software.

I am sure you will get as many views on this as there are contributors.
