Vat electronic updates

Vat electronic updates

Didn't find your answer?

I received document CE34/02 VAT Changes in Fuel Scale Charges in my secure mailbox with HMRC on 30/1/06. As it is dated 17 Apr 02 and contained rates that were clearly out of date, I ignored it. Today I received another update by normal e-mail for the same thing. I called the helpline on the e-mail to ask them if they knew that they were sending out confusing and out of date rates. Their response was that it was nothing to do with them, they are just a 'contact centre' and I should use the correct current rates. Am I missing the point here? Is it reasonable to expect HMRC to send out only current info and not that which is 4 years out of date? Is it also reasonable to expect them to be slightly grateful for being advised about this error which is possibly systematic and likely to affect many more people than just me?

To their credit the WebMaster Editor of HMRC has replied today as follows, which is encouraging.

"I can confirm that the link is going to the correct item Budget Notice 25/03. We have been going through the content on our website making some minor changes to layout and presentation to make our documents more user friendly.

When text has been amended/updated we have the facility to send out an alert which informs users that an amendment has been made.

In cases where there have been a slight change in layout but no amendment/update to the text, we have the facility to turn the alert off.

Unfortunately in this instance (on 3 Feb) we forgot to turn the alert facilty off when making changes to the layout of Budget Notice 25/03 which resulted in an alert being sent out where no textual changes had been made.
