The VAT flat rate scheme

My client's trade is the repair and restoration of porcelain- be it vases, plates figurines etc. mainly for the antiques trade, and occasionally for private collectors. The 'repair' side is literally gluing broken porcelain pieces back together again. The 'restoration' side is skilfully painting over the cracks so as to disguise the repair.  My colleague considers it as being in the trade sector -  'any other activity not listed elsewhere' - 10.5%. However, I consider the correct trade sector to be 'repairing personal or household goods' - 9%.

The objects which are being repaired are technically 'household goods' according to the legal definition. The ornaments are also personal goods that you would expect to see in a home environment. I consider it to be irrelevant that most of my client's  work is undertaken for the antiques trade. Members' views would be most welcome.
