Virtual Private Network

Didn't find your answer?

Is anyone using a VPN to run sageline 50 financial controller and/or IRIS accounts production to remote users using an ADSL connection? If so can you tell me if it works well or if it has been problematic or slow. It would be helpfull if you could also give me an indication of the number of people using you VPN simultaneously.

VPN versus remote control
We have two business sites, plus the FD (me) often working at home, and the chairman based in France. VPN is fine - IF your connection is consistent and fast, but unless you have synchronous connections at both ends running any sizeable application (like Sage) is going to be s---l---o---w. The usual ADSL connections are asynchronous - you get your 2MB when downloading only, uploads will be at a snail's pace, like 512K if your lucky, so any two-way conversation between the application on a remote PC and the data at HQ is difficult. A synchronous connection is likely to be very expensive (we were talking about £10,000 a year for the two business locations.) VPN can be tricky to set up.

So we use a mixture: I love GoToMyPC, but it means taking over an office PC for the duration, so noone else can use it for a while. Fine if I'm working after everyone else has gone home, and it's very useful to be able to take control of a new user's PC, fix a problem while you talk to them and they can see what you're doing, without leaving your desk. Then we use an online backup system (IBackup) to upload data from the offices at night, so it's available (at compressed download speed) the next morning. We can use IBackup to exchange files for any purpose, it's secure, fast and easy.

Try LogMeIn instead
If your remote workers have broadband at home, a simple solution is to to use something like LogMeIn - go to: -

https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=home

This allows them to remotely access and control a work PC without any of the configuration and set up problems of a VPN.

Good luck

Anthony

SDSL coming
Some areas of the UK now have access to SDSL lines, meaning uploading data can run at the same speed as downloading, which should make remote working quicker.

At the moment, only a few exchanges seem to be set up for SDSL but the number should increase soon (we currently have three locations within one city - two have access to SDSL, one doesn't yet).
