Website Costs

Website Costs

Didn't find your answer?

I seem to remember something about specific accounting treatment for your own website costs.

Could someone please be kind enough to provide a brief summary e.g. are you able to capitalise any of these costs?

Website treatment
In general, the expenses involved will be:
Design & construction of website
Purchase and/or registration of domain name
One-off or annual or monthly ISP hosting fees.

Whereas the monthly or ongoing fees can usually be classified under "telecommunications costs" in "General admin expenses" on the tax return (ie revenue expense, fully allowable), The larger initial costs should usually be capitalised. Expenditure/investment in IT and e-commerce incurred after 1/4/00 until 31/3/03 (if made by a small company or entity) attracts a 100% first year capital allowance. The IR's website has more details on this area.
