the quickest way
to get them to answer is to sing along to the music in a deranged fashion, as you will inevitably be caught doing so. Works even better if it's classical music and you conduct.

Mr Willis
You are not alone.
I also talk to my computer, making such comments as "Yes of course I want to save the changes; why do you think I made them?"

Start a unilateral conversation (? Oxymoron)
Am I alone in saying (shouting!) such things down the 'phone as: -

'No, I haven't called at a busy time; you don't have enough operators.'
'No, my call isn't imporatnt to you; if it were you would have people to answer it.'
'Why are you asking me to key my account number when the operator will ask me again?'

just on the offchance that they DO record the waiting time?

Bear in mind . . .

Bear in mind that while you are on hold the company / government department telephone call recording system may be continuing to record while you, er, make love to a beautiful woman!

RE

Yes hi hi hi, I have found it extremley frustrating when i am trying to order parts from Dagenham Dave only to be put on hold for ages.

I like to play Merrily We Roll Along on my touch tone phone, the notes are as follows:
321 2333 222 333 3212333 321 23.

Being on hold is like making love to a beautiful woman, you have to be patient, enjoy the music and participate in some hands free action.

Swiss.
