Word 2000 Margin Problem

Word 2000 Margin Problem

Didn't find your answer?

When I print any document either to my local printer or any network printer, the right hand margin is moved left by about double. It is set at 3cm.
If I print the same document from another PC on the network, I do not have the problem. This suggests it is not a printer driver at fault.
I have checked the margins in the documents and in normal.dot and these are fine.
I have re-installed Office 2000 and used the Repair function on the CD but still have the problem.
Has anyone any idea what is happening?
I do not get the same problem in other applications, I can print an email right across the page , for instance. And Excel is OK.
My PC is virtually unusable at the moment without being able to print properly.
Thanks for any help.

Some thoughts
You may have already condisered these points, but you sound anxious!

1) Check the page size is set to A4 and not, say, US legal
2) Have you got any gutter margins set? These normally only work on the left or top, unless you are using a right to left language, but you never can tell!
3) Check your paragraph formatting for a right indent
4) If you re-install Office on top of the existing installation, it will keep any of your default settings. You would have to remove Office, delete any remaining directories, templates etc, and re-install from scratch to get a fresh start.

Ah!
'u' x55 in Times New Roman 12 point only takes me to about 11.5cm in from the left margin using your set up. There is something wrong, therefore, with the way your installation is handling the screen display since your printer is getting it right!

There may be a problem with the font.
1) Check that it is Time New Roman, and is a True Type font, not a printer font that may not be properly scaled for the screen
2) Delete the font and reinstall it from Control Panel
3) Try a diferent font. You should get 65 x 'u' in arial 12 point on your page set up.

Now, I installed a new video card and increased the screen resolution yesterday. I cannot see how this would affect printing, unless someone knows different.
Sounds a bit suspicious given what I have observed above. Try a diferent resolution. Did the video card come with specific Win2k drivers? Try downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturers website.

Word 200 Margin Problem
Neil (and anyone else viewing!)
Thanks for this but no luck.

Can I give some more info in case you or anyone else has a brainwave?

I have margins set at 3.17cm either side so the text size is 14.66. This adds up to the size of A4 paper and shows correctly on the ruler.

Using Times New Roman 12, I typed in the letter u 55 times in each of three rows.

This looks fine on the screen but when I print it, I get 3.17 left margin, the 3 rows of 55 letters only taking up 11.5cm and then 6cm of right margin.

If we look at the same document on another PC, the text now only uses two and a half rows.

So its seems that the right margin is set much further left on my PC but it does not show like this on the screen.

Now, I installed a new video card and increased the screen resolution yesterday. I cannot see how this would affect printing, unless someone knows different.

Neil, I am a bit anxious, and intrigued, but at least I have other PC's I can use for some proper work.

Word 2000 Margin Problem
Thanks, Tracey, but its happening on 3 printers which leads me to think its not a driver problem. But I will check again.
