Working abroad

Working abroad

Didn't find your answer?

Please excuse my ignorance to this as this is the first time this has come up for me.

I have a client who is employed and has some rental properties.  Called the other day and said that they will be working from employers offices in barcelona for minimum of 6 months more like a year.  He is completly office based and is not client facing so can work from anywhere really.

He has not been asked to go there, he asked them and they said thats fine. There will be no change in his contract and he will still be employed by uk office and paid in to his uk bank account.  He will tfr money across to barca as and when needed.

Tax wise is there anything he needs to do, are there any tax advantages to be had anywhere.

I do not expect to be given the whole complete answers but some pointers would be most appreciated.

Regards

Same job

He will not get a new contract as he is doing exactlkt the same job just sat in a different office.  He could be doing it from USA, home, andywhere.

My client just fancied living in Barcelona for a while, and boss can see no reason why he just can not go over there.

Then the client may still need

Spanish tax returns and all the Double Tax problems associated therewith.

Does the UK contract include spells working from Barcelona?

I suggest you find a consultant who can guide you and your client in the right direction

UK resident?

Sounds like he may well stay UK resident - in which case he will be fully liable to UK tax and NIC wherever he earns his salary (he's not non-UK domicile, is he?). However, even if he is UK resident, if he is physically outside the UK for more than 6 months, his tenants or letting agents should strictly treat him as a non-resident landlord and withhold tax from the rents! This can be avoided by getting HMRC to confirm that they should pay him gross under the Non-Resident Landlord rules. Of course, the tenants/agents may not even realise he is away for that length of time so it may be academic but he should be aware that this might happen.
