The pressure is on with just five days left until self assessment deadline. Here are some news headlines to start the day.

Aspire replacement havoc on the way

Taxpayers face havoc due to HMRC’s “complacent approach” to IT systems and a requirement to overhaul them in two years' time, MPs have warned.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said HMRC faced an enormous challenge in replacing the current Aspire contract for maintaining its hardware and software by 2017.

As reported in The Telegraph the PAC said the department does not currently have the skills to negotiate good value new IT deals and also lacks a contingency plan in case there are serious issues.

Self assessment season facts and figures

The deadline for self assessment tax returns is fast approaching and HMRC is waiting with “open arms” for millions of documents to come flooding in, reports the International Business Times.

Figures from HMRC reveal 569,847 tax returns came in on deadline day in 2014 and only 7% of taxpayers who have to do a SA tax return missed the deadline in January 2014.

So far this year HMRC has received 8.2m returns – and the Revenue is still waiting on another 2.5m.
