Deloitte appoints record number of female partners

Deloitte has promoted 75 people to partner this year, almost a third of whom are women. Thirty-five of those promoted have been made equity partners.

Deloitte said that 22 of the 75 promoted are women, compared to 13 of the 65 that were made partner last year.

The big four firm also announced a “return-to-work” scheme for former employees, providing paid internships for women who have been out of work for between three and six years. It plans to hire 80pc of those that take up the internships.

“25% of both the firm’s Executive and Board are female and we are committed to continuing to do more to create more opportunities in Deloitte for women at a senior level,” said Dave Sproul, Deloitte UK’s chief executive.

HMRC fines amnesty as taxman faces backlog

According to an internal memo leaked to the Daily Telegraph, HMRC officials no longer check why someone was unable to submit self-assessment forms if they provide a “reasonable” excuse.

Up to 890,000 people who filed late tax returns have been given an amnesty over the £100 fine for missing the deadline, nearly £90million worth of fines.

The memo asked staff to write off the £100 charge without further investigation if people with seemingly mitigating circumstances appealed after paying their tax bill.

The unusual action has been taken as HMRC faces a backlog of almost a million letters from taxpayers, the documents showed.
