Sage conference news round-up

AccountingWEB managing editor Rob Lovell has been our man in New Orleans this week, reporting from the Sage Summit conference.

In contrast to its dominance in the UK, Sage is playing catch-up to QuickBooks in North America, but is showing signs of innovation in its latest cloud developments.

And just to show that it hasn’t neglected its other arch-rival, Xero, and its relationship with KPMG, Sage announced that it was partnering with Deloitte to deliver a new SME cloud accounting service. It also announced an education partnership with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers.

If you want more background Sage’s strategy, also have a look at event coverage from our US sister site AccountingWEB.com.

Coach hid stash of illegal tobacco

The driver of a coach and his only passenger have each been jailed for 12 months, after 900 kgs of raw leaf tobacco was found hidden behind a false wall inside a shower in the vehicle they were travelling in, reports HMRC

Uldis Krievkalns, 50, and Vilnis Skunstins, 54, were intercepted by Border Force in May 2015, after they arrived at the Port of Harwich. The pair raised suspicions when they told officers they were travelling to Ireland to be metal workers in an iron foundry, but couldn’t say where they were going or who they were going to be working for. A search of the vehicle revealed the tobacco which had been hidden behind a false wall in the coach's shower cubicle. The total duty evaded is estimated as £179,928.18.
