Andrew Liddle, a partner at Cumbrian firm Saint Accountants, will be celebrating this Christmas after winning the prize draw for an iPad mini in cloud accounting software specialist Xero’s recent survey.

During the past two months, 657 AccountingWEB members completed the survey, which delved into accountants' attitudes toward cloud accounting and social media.

More than four out of five respondents (83%) were already using online accounting applications and 72% used social media.

Xero's UK managing director Gary Turner was also gratified to find that most accountants think the cloud is here to stay, with just 1% of respondents saying it's "just another passing technology fad".

"If we had run this survey two to three years ago, I don't think the figures would be so pronounced. This aligns with our experience in the market; the momentum is beginning to pick up," Turner said.

"There appears to be an acceptance that this is a significant change in the way we're using technology in practice."

Turner is a strong advocate of social media and says it's natural for accountants to post updates on Facebook to keep their clients informed as they’re more likely to be on Facebook than reading a pile of emails.

“With a billion users, Facebook is a mini-web - so why wouldn’t you embrace that? You’d be excluding an important segment of your target market," he said.

Liddle's interest was piqued when he saw the survey, as his 14 partner firm is in the middle of considering its cloud accounting options to meet clients' changing needs.

"We are looking to implement a cloud-based system to provide our clients with the opportunity to use such a system if they chose to go with this option and to provide an enhanced service to them as a result," he said.

Liddle, who was randomly picked from the list of respondents, was thrilled with his prize and seems to look favourably on his benefactors at Xero.

"Xero are market leaders, which is one of the reasons we are considering bringing their cloud-accounting software system in," he said.
